The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department recently awarded its Medal of Honor to Officer Matthew Kovacich, and a Purple Heart to Officer Frank Harris.
Their story is told in this video.
On September 13, 2013, the officers were responding to a prowler call. Upon arrival, the suspected burglars ran.
Officer Harris confronted one of the subjects and the subject fought with him in an attempt to gain control of his holstered firearm. During the fight, the weapon was discharged. Officer Harris immediately realized he had been shot in the leg. He called out repeatedly that he needed assistance.
With no hesitation, Officer Kovacich, who was on the other side of the wall, made it to the top of the cement wall and saw his partner on the ground holding onto a subject. The subject was standing over Officer Harris, kicking him in an attempt to escape. Officer Kovacich pulled himself over barbed wire and pulled it down enough to allow room to jump down into the lot, which caused several cuts to his hands. Without knowing the whereabouts of the firearm, and with no regard to his own personal safety, he ran toward the subject, leaped into the air and tacked the subject with the full force of his body. This proved to be a stunning blow to the subject. Officer Harris would later tell investigators, he saw, "Superman fly through the air into the subject!"
