The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced a multi-jurisdictional effort today to crack down on drunk drivers during the Labor Day weekend. The message to potential partiers: If you don't stop yourself from drinking and driving--we will.
There have been more than 4,000 drunk driving arrests in the county so far. That number could climb this weekend, if people who are partying don't head law enforcement warnings.
Officers throughout the Las Vegas Valley will patrol the roads for impaired drivers with the goal of Zero Fatalities. Officers from LVMPD, Nevada Highway Patrol, Henderson Police Department and North Las Vegas Police Department will be participating in multiple DUI checkpoints throughout the valley this weekend.
To avoid being another statistic, traffic safety officials advise that anyone planning to drink first keep the following rules in mind:
Program a cab company's number into your phone;
Call a sober friend or family member who is home;
Give your keys to a sober friend;
Take public transportation; or
Rent a nearby hotel room.
This year, 35 people died on Nevada's roadways from alcohol-related crashes, according to the preliminary data from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety. Officers are asking that residents and drivers who spot a potential drunk driver on the road to contact police and help keep that number from growing.
